Parent & Teacher Conferences are scheduled to be held this Thursday and Friday. Over the past several years, we have placed our students at the center of their learning by preparing them for student-led conferences. Even though this powerful practice can't happen this year due to the pandemic restrictions, the teachers at St. George are eager to share the academic and social-emotional growth of our resilient students. Please reach out to Jan in the office to schedule one of these meetings and/or if any parent or community member wishes to discuss standards-based grading, curriculum, Expeditionary Learning, behavioral procedures, Star Wars or anything else on your mind, please know that I will also be available during these early release days to meet. You can also email me directly at a.bullard@stgeorgemsu.org to set up a time. Happy Holidays! Adam Bullard Instructional Administrator

There is a bus change for this afternoon. Students riding the Eagle bus in the afternoon, who live on Ridge Road, Turkey Cove Road and Wallston Road, will arrive 15-20 minutes later than usual. Students who live along Port Clyde Road will not be affected. Due to a driver's absence, we will be combining two bus routes. There will still be space to maintain our covid-19 safety protocols.

Hello Dragons, In the next couple of weeks, you might see a new face (and tail) around school. Zale, a service dog in training, will be joining the middle level team for a little while! Zale is a 16 month old black lab who is in training with America’s VetDogs, which is an accredited organization that provides highly trained service dogs for disabled veterans and first responders. Zale is part of the Prison Puppy Program, which places puppies into prisons and pairs them with inmate handlers who, working with licensed dog trainers, train them in essential obedience and service dog skills. The puppies go home every weekend with a Weekend Puppy Raiser to learn to use their skills in public; this is where they practice being in all of the spaces that service dogs will need to work, like stores, restaurants, movie theaters, traffic, public transportation - and yes, schools! Mrs. Bartke’s family has been weekend puppy raising for America’s VetDogs for several years, and Zale has been with them since he was 12 weeks old. Because of Covid 19, the pups have been pulled from the prison for a few weeks, which means Zale will be working on his training here at school. This is a fantastic environment for him to practice being a calm, focused working dog around lots of distractions, and I think his happy wiggles will undoubtedly bring some smiles to our community as well, along with the opportunity to learn about what Service Dogs do, and how to interact with them. Zale will be “at work” while he’s at school, which means he’ll be on leash beside Mrs. Bartke, lying down in his designated spot in the classroom, or taking a break in his crate. He won’t be wandering the room or allowed to greet people on his own, since he’s learning to be “on duty” and to ignore people and distractions. If a student (or staff member!) is interested in saying hello and even getting a little belly rub in, though, they can absolutely ask. If you have any questions about Zale, you can email Mrs. Bartke, and if you have any questions about America’s VetDogs, their website is www.americasvetdogs.org. Mrs. Bartke

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT: Middle Level Spanish Here is a link to an entertaining video shared by Mrs. Boggs with her middle level Spanish students this trimester. Mrs. Boggs is blending highly engaging media with her daily lessons in an effort to boost engagement and provide valuable Spanish language foundational skills. You are encouraged to watch with your middle level student to reinforce their learning, but be warned, the song is a major ear worm that you'll be singing to yourself all day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3KbP2OEbW4

The Mondays and Tuesdays before Thanksgiving Break (11/23 and 11/24) and Winter Break (12/21 and 12/22) have been changed to Teacher Workshop Days, which means there will be no school for students on those days. Blueberry Cove will offer free childcare & programming for students in grades K-8 and families will be able to sign up to have school meals delivered to their homes. Teachers will use these days to plan for the upcoming weeks and months. Support staff will do additional cleaning and maintenance to the school building and vehicles. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Superintendent Mike Felton at m.felton@stgeorgemsu.org.
