School Seal

Dear Families,

I write with a heavy heart this morning. The mass shooting in Lewiston last night has shaken our entire state. Our hearts go out to the people of Lewiston and Auburn and everyone impacted by this tragedy.

I spoke with members of our Crisis Team, other Mid-Coast superintendents, and law enforcement last night and this morning. At this time, the suspect is still at large. According to law enforcement, there is no specific information that would indicate any immediate threats to our region.

Closing school today was a very difficult decision. We want to be open for our students and families to provide a sense of normalcy and safety. However, given the fact the suspect is still at large, I have decided to close school. This is out of an abundance of caution and a recognition of the fear, anxiety, and grief many of are feeling today - feelings that are understandably heightened given that the suspect is still at large.

High school bus runs will run as scheduled so long as your child's. high school remains open.

When we return to school on Friday, staff will be briefed on how to respond if students bring up the shooting during the school day. This will be done in an age appropriate manner. Staff will not bring up shooting; instead, they will be prepared to respond if students bring the topic up. Our goal will be to provide students with a sense of normalcy and security.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me (m.felton@stgeorgemsu.org; 542.6394).

Sincerely,

Mike Felton, St. George MSU Superintendent
