Students riding the Eeyore Bus and the Dolphin Bus in the morning who live on Route 131 and Long Cove Road may experience a 5 to 10 minute delay due to a driver absence and subsequent combination of bus runs. Please allow extra time for the bus to arrive. Dolphin Bus students who live on Kinney Woods Road, Dennison Road, Clark Island Road and Seal Harbor Road should remain unaffected. Even though the buses will be combined there will still be space to maintain our bus safety Covid-19 protocols of one child per seat unless siblings.

Curriculum Spotlight: Everyday Math:
St. George School uses the comprehensive Everyday Math program in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Research shows that knowledge and skills cannot be developed in a single lesson or unit - mastery requires repeated exposure to key ideas over time. In response to this, Everyday Math helps students achieve and grow by “spiraling” math concepts through concrete real-world applications and carefully constructed learning progressions throughout the year and across grades spans.
In the Fall of 2019, more students than ever had met or exceeded their growth goals on the NWEA Math test (66%). Putting this curriculum in the hands of our phenomenal teachers was one major reason for this.
For more information about the Everyday Math program, please email me or check out their resource for parents here: https://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/parents/

Although it had to be online this year, the Saint George Math Team still competed in the 2021 Mathcounts season. Four of our students qualified to participate in the chapter competition. Congratulations to Charlotte Daum, Noah Keene, Karly Putansu, and Zoe Hufnagel. Our students came in 19th, 18th, 17th, and 5th place overall. This year for the first time, we have a student who qualified for the invitational competition. If you see Charlotte, congratulate her and wish her luck at the invitational competition!

Curriculum Spotlight: During the summer, our Return to School committee identified the need for a well defined social-emotional curriculum at St. George School given the anticipated effect of our extended closure this spring. Meeting students’ individual needs has always been a strength at our small community school which is why adopting 2nd Step as our foundational social-emotional skill-building program was a natural choice. Research clearly shows that students who are explicitly taught skills in emotion regulation, decision making, and focus are better able to meet academic demands as well as develop a greater sense of empathy. 2nd Step is a highly regarded research-based program that supports this part of our mission. For more information about 2nd Step or curriculum at St. George School, please contact Adam Bullard at a.bullard@stgeorgemsu.org

Parent & Teacher Conferences are scheduled to be held this Thursday and Friday. Over the past several years, we have placed our students at the center of their learning by preparing them for student-led conferences. Even though this powerful practice can't happen this year due to the pandemic restrictions, the teachers at St. George are eager to share the academic and social-emotional growth of our resilient students.
Please reach out to Jan in the office to schedule one of these meetings and/or if any parent or community member wishes to discuss standards-based grading, curriculum, Expeditionary Learning, behavioral procedures, Star Wars or anything else on your mind, please know that I will also be available during these early release days to meet. You can also email me directly at a.bullard@stgeorgemsu.org to set up a time.

Hello Dragons,
In the next couple of weeks, you might see a new face (and tail) around school. Zale, a service dog in training, will be joining the middle level team for a little while!
Zale is a 16 month old black lab who is in training with America’s VetDogs, which is an accredited organization that provides highly trained service dogs for disabled veterans and first responders. Zale is part of the Prison Puppy Program, which places puppies into prisons and pairs them with inmate handlers who, working with licensed dog trainers, train them in essential obedience and service dog skills. The puppies go home every weekend with a Weekend Puppy Raiser to learn to use their skills in public; this is where they practice being in all of the spaces that service dogs will need to work, like stores, restaurants, movie theaters, traffic, public transportation - and yes, schools! Mrs. Bartke’s family has been weekend puppy raising for America’s VetDogs for several years, and Zale has been with them since he was 12 weeks old.
Because of Covid 19, the pups have been pulled from the prison for a few weeks, which means Zale will be working on his training here at school. This is a fantastic environment for him to practice being a calm, focused working dog around lots of distractions, and I think his happy wiggles will undoubtedly bring some smiles to our community as well, along with the opportunity to learn about what Service Dogs do, and how to interact with them.
Zale will be “at work” while he’s at school, which means he’ll be on leash beside Mrs. Bartke, lying down in his designated spot in the classroom, or taking a break in his crate. He won’t be wandering the room or allowed to greet people on his own, since he’s learning to be “on duty” and to ignore people and distractions. If a student (or staff member!) is interested in saying hello and even getting a little belly rub in, though, they can absolutely ask.
If you have any questions about Zale, you can email Mrs. Bartke, and if you have any questions about America’s VetDogs, their website is www.americasvetdogs.org.

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT: Middle Level Spanish
Here is a link to an entertaining video shared by Mrs. Boggs with her middle level Spanish students this trimester. Mrs. Boggs is blending highly engaging media with her daily lessons in an effort to boost engagement and provide valuable Spanish language foundational skills. You are encouraged to watch with your middle level student to reinforce their learning, but be warned, the song is a major ear worm that you'll be singing to yourself all day.

Teachers will use these days to plan for the upcoming weeks and months. Support staff will do additional cleaning and maintenance to the school building and vehicles.

St. George School's annual Math Camp will not be happening this August.
This cancellation breaks a chain of many successful summers where students at STG had the opportunity to practice skills and explore mathematically enriching problems; all while having fun and connecting with teachers and friends in the process.
We are confident that next summer will be a return to normal operating procedures and that we will once again be able to open our doors to summer learning.
If you have any questions or comments about math camp, please contact Adam Bullard at the school. a.bullard@stgeorgemsu.org

This program helps us feed our community, costs St. George MSU nothing, and if the percentage of our students who qualify for free or reduced meals exceeds the state average then out school could receive about $150,000 in additional state subsidy. If our percentage falls below the state average then we receive no state subsidy for economically disadvantaged students.
You can fill out an application online at https://bit.ly/MSULunchApp or access a paper copy at https://bit.ly/STG-SY2020FRM.

Dear Parents/Families,
Please note that in observance of Memorial Day, there will be no food deliveries on Monday, May 25th. We will resume deliveries on Tuesday, May 26th. Families that need additional food support should contact the St. George Community Development Corporation (info@stgeorgecommmunity.org or 372-2193) or complete an online ordering form at http://www.stgeorgecommunity.org/cupboardorder/. Orders should be submitted by midnight on Wednesday.
Thank you,
St. George School Food Service

Is it hard to fall asleep at night? Are your kids worried that they will catch the coronavirus? Are you or your kids worried about re-entering into the world? If these worries or any other are taking center stage for you or your kids right now, please consider coming to the parent support group this Thursday the 7th at 8 PM or next Monday the 11th at 3 PM. After checking in, our focus will be anxiety. We will try to explore questions such as What's the difference between stress and anxiety? How do we know when we or our children need more support? What are some concrete strategies to help reduce our children's and our own anxiety? Amy Hufnagel, the school-wide Behavioral Interventionist, will facilitate the meeting. We look forward to the conversation.

Spectrum (previously TimeWarner) is making its internet service available for free for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who don’t already have internet through the company. To enroll in the program, call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. You should expect significant hold times as many families are taking advantage of this offer.

There may be a $5 fee per month to rent their wireless router. You do NOT need to purchase any services, though the wireless router is what allows multiple wireless devices like iPads, tablets or chromebooks to connect. In order to be eligible for free service you must not have an outstanding bill, and you must not have had service provided to your location in the past thirty days. After the sixty day initial offer you must remember to cancel your subscription. You do NOT need a credit card, and you do not need to sign a contract. Celebration of Learning: You are the needed ingredient
At EL schools it often takes more than a teacher and students to produce a meaningful learning experience; it takes an authentic audience. That is where you - the St. George community member - can help. By attending our Celebration of Learning on June 13th at 1pm, you will be providing our students with the opportunity to communicate their strengths, challenges, and growth as students in our school. It is our intent that these Kindergarten through 8th grade capstone experiences will help students become more effective learners and in turn discover the best version of themselves. We hope to see you there.
